Aims of the department

The Economics Department aims to:
  • Prepare and qualify students during university and postgraduate phases in the fields of theoretical and applied economics to meet the needs of labor market locally and globally.
  • Qualify staffs who are able to create the economic policies and plans to develop the Syrian economic.
  • Provide students with basic knowledge to conduct studies and economic researches.
  •   Improve students’ abilities to evaluate the effects of international and regional changes on different countries’ economic especially the Syrian one.
  • Conduct economic researches for reaching to the required level in economic development.
  • Build and develop student’s personality.
  • Hold training courses responding to the society needs to necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Strengthen the cultural and scientific relations with universities and scientific councils especially the Arabic ones.
  • Build a high level of interaction between the college and society’s economic and social institutions to connect the university with society

Conditions of acceptance

Having a scientific baccalaureate by 2035 out of 2400 degree at least.
Applying to the system of the university’s acceptance.

Course description

Financial Markets and Institutions
This course discusses the functions and activities of financial institutions. It analyzes the financial systems, capital and money markets and the activities of financial intermediaries such as commercial banks and investment companies. The course also

Principles of Microeconomics This course introduces students to the theory of Microeconomics. It covers topics related to the pricing system, resources allocation, competition, monopoly, economic
Introduction to Business This course deals with functions of management, and the way of starting and operating businesses. It covers the relationship between businesses and the society. It also discusses types of business organizations, and explains the role of marketing, finance, production, management, advertising, pricing, human resource management and risk in the organization
Econometrics
This course introduces the modeling framework and techniques of economic data. It covers the basic principles of regression models, their estimation and inference, as well as model diagnostics and selection. The emphasis is on empirical application and data analysis also it covers empirical model construction, estimation, diagnostics and selection for economic models. Problems specific to both time series and cross section data will be discussed. Topics on panel data and limited dependent variables will also be included.
Project Evaluation and Economic Studies This course highlights the methodology of preparing and evaluating feasibility studies for business projects. It gives the students guidance regarding the selection of appropriate projects out of a set of available projects using the relevant strategic, financial, marketing, technical and organizational techniques
national accounts The course the system of national accounts presenting the sequence of accounts for transactions and other flows as well as balance sheets with a focus on the framework of the 2008 SNA. It will cover the main concepts involving transactions, other economic flows, stocks, institutional units, classifications, and main macroeconomic aggregates measured by the system. The main lectures include:
- Sessions on the production account covering the definition and measurement of output, intermediate consumption, and value added; valuation issues; and the treatment of particular industries;
- Source data and issues in the compilation of GDP by production and expenditure approaches;
- Specific issues related to goods and services transactions, including supply and use framework, inventory valuation adjustment, consumption of fixed capital, non-observed and informal economy. Emphasis is also placed on sharing country experiences.
Economics of industry and environment Study of how firms compete, and the structure of markets. Emphasis on oligopoly markets and use of game theory. Focus on differentiated goods, price discrimination, barriers to entry, vertical
relationships, advertising, strategic behavior, and empirical industrial organization including estimation of demand and costs. Applications to competition policy emphasizing evaluation of horizontal mergers.
International Finance This course aims to provide students with an understanding of how the global monetary and financial system works. It provides a framework for analyzing issues that arise from the participation of countries in such a global system.  Specifically, it addresses issues such as how exchange rates are determined, the linkages between domestic monetary policy and exchange rate policy, the problem of global imbalance, issues related to currency and financial crises; the evolution of global monetary system and the desirability of a common currency etc.
International

International Economics An overview of the nature of and reasons for international movements of merchandise and factors of production, the measurement of balance of payments transactions, thedetermination of exchange rates, and other topics This course includes theoretical analysis, brief historical background, andcoverage of contemporary issues in policy coordination and trade negotiation.

This course includes a number of contemporary economicissues : the crisis of the international monetary system – the energy crisis –
privatization – economic globalization – the world  financial crisis – the world economic crisis –
etc .
Mathematical Economics This course uses mathematical tools to studyapplied economic topics. Students will come to appreciate how mathematicspushesthe economic science to a high degree of analytical rigor, and why
mathematics has become increasingly indispensable in economics. This coursewill also equip students with basic mathematicaltechniques that areoccasionally required in their career.
