Nature of work

An insurance agent works as an intermediary between insurance agency and customers. He/she handles the following tasks:
  • Selling all kinds of policy insurance like motorcarsinsurance, fire insurance, health insurance, life insurance, marine insurance, and aircraft insurance.
  • Defining customers’ needs concerning insurance, premium costs, and the way of paying them.
  • Providing with information about group and individual insurance, paid loans, prepaid loans, compensations, and other issues concerning insurance policy.
  • Making sure that a customerhas gotten a medical examination and completed insurance policy data.
  • Supervising charging and answering costumers’ inquiries.
  • Guiding clients towards the best and cheaper insurance policies.
  •  Being acquainted with all procedures beginning from accidents registrations until paying compensations.
  • Looking for new clients and encouraging them to take an insurance policy.

Environment of work

An insurance agent usually works in insurance agents and brokeragefirms within a different activities group.Freelance work participatingwith other insurance and commission agents is possible. Also, he/she can establish his/her own private agency and works for many insurance agencies, but he/she should have a certificate allows him practice this career. He/she can hire many specialized agents depending on the insurance activities.

Professional life

 After finishing the training course, an insurance agent can begin his/her professional life by working within a group in an insurance agency. An insurance agent should have an active role in insurance and labor markets. For example, He/she communicates with insurance and brokeragefirms. Also, he/she should communicate effectively with clients such as health activities centers, important workshops, factors, Sea and land carriage companies, and others. An insurance agent should be able to manage the agency and attract clients.
Working long hours, which might extend to extra, are required. Frequent travellingis required and travelling oversea might be required too.
 

Getting the job

After gaining the bachelor degree in economics or another related field like business or marketing, an insurance agent should take a training course in insurance inSyrian Insurance Supervisory Commission. Being self-employment required registration in Association of Syrian Insurance Agents and gaining the permission to practice this career from the specialized local administration.
Syrian Universities grant the bachelor degree in economics. Aleppo and Damascus Universities grant the bachelor degree in economics (insurance specialization). You can inform about the insurance courses’ dates from Insurance Supervisory Commission.
 

Skills

An insurance and brokeragents should know the commercial controls and the conditions of insurance sectors. Also, he/she should have the following skills:
  • Knowing how to use the programs that are applied in the field of insurance.
  • Mastering the ways of convincing and encouraging clients.
  • Being able to negotiate, convince clients to buy the products and communicate with them.
  • Being able to analyze, deduce conclusions, and manage time. He/she might be required to speak more than one language.
