Nature of work

An events manager usually performs many of the following tasks:
 
  • Manage staff responsible for event coordination activities.
  • Coordinate details of events such as conferences, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, charity events, surprise parties, trade shows, sales meetings, business meetings, employee appreciation events and virtual events.
  • Hire, train, and educate staff on proper event procedures.
  • Calculate budgets and adjust when necessary.
  • Book venues and negotiate fees.
  • Prepare invitations and send them out at appropriate time.
  • Hire waiting staff.
  • Work with honor guests to ensure all requests are met.
  • Guideline attendance to the event.
  • Promote the event using flyers, cold calling, and social media as examples to get attention.
  • Analyze event performance and prepare presentations.
  • Define company brand through events.
  • Ensure that the staff is prepared well for events.
  • Pay to vendors for their participation in the event.
  • Provide receipts if needed.
  • Make sure that the day of event goes smoothly.
  • Set up booths, flowers, decorations, and other event decor.
  • Plan menus, order food, and hire chefs or caterers.
  • Test food, including main dishes and desserts.

Environment of work

  • Events managers often travel and visit many places and people. This profession requires to work outside the company and with different groups to offer services at multiple levels; therefore the work environment is varied. From the event type to the company client, the ambience of the work place could be drastically different. It beyond doubt that teamwork of event have to be on their toes all the time moving from one place to another at the drop of a hat.
  • Events management is a part-time, entry-level position that may lead to a full time salaried position. The events manager works independently, and he will work closely with the company president and director of operations to develop, manage, direct and oversee event operations.
  • The events manager will also work closely with the director to develop and implement strategies and objectives to achieve the company's goals.
  • The hours they work depend on their current project. Some may have flexible hours while others have a nine to five or overtime schedule.

Professional life

  • Promotion may involve movement from an assistant to team leader, which may include managing a small team, or to a different management role.
  • With experience, an event organizer is likely to take on responsibility for larger scale events, which are more complex to manage, involve higher profile clients and include bigger budgets.
  • Career progression is likely to involve moving to a larger company or, alternatively, working as a freelance event management consultant.
  • The daily work is diverse and continually interesting. Progression within the industry will come with experience, and senior roles can be achieved depending on the number and size of events were successful managed.
  • He/she may choose to shift his career from an event management company to work on specialist events in hotels, leisure centers, or with marketing departments. If he/she was experienced and have a strong network with clients, then he/she may work into freelancing or consultancy. 
  • The salary depends on the industry, employer and experience (25000 S.P in public sector). Those hired full time, they may receive benefits packages.

Getting the job

  • Bachelor degree in marketing or business Administration.
  • Bachelor degree in tourism sciences or hospitality & hoteling.
  • At least Professional diploma in tourism and hoteling, or professional diploma in business administration and marketing, or convenience scientific level for job but with training courses in events management, public relations, marketing, business Administration or hospitality & hoteling Management.

Skills

Events manager should have general skills as following:
 
  • He/she should have basic computer skills including working with spreadsheets.
  • Problem solving skills and deductive reasoning abilities.
  • Excellent organizing skills and time management skills.
  • Basic handyman skills and experience working with a variety of tools.
  • Employers prefer candidates that have experience in participating in obstacle challenges, triathlons or competitive events.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
