Nature of work

A data analyst transforms raw data to information or knowledge to be used in taking decisions in economic, social, service, health, engineering, and geometric fields. Analyzing data includes estimating research community (arithmetical mean, discrepancy, and median), estimating phenomenon changes, and forecasting the results of the phenomenon afterward. Also, it includes testing the assumptions about the equality of two different  research communities, and showing the main factors that affect this phenomena andothers. Analyzing data begins by studying the actual observations that are gathered according to field studies or by revising the historical data that is saved as collecteddatabases in organizations. A data analyst usually handles the following tasks:


Putting strategies to test data validity.
Putting clear strategy to analyze and manipulate data.
Applying the strategy of analyzing and using the tools of automatic data manipulation.
Explaining the statistical analysis results and clarifying the studied phenomenon to take the suitable decisions for solving different issues in life especially economic, social, health, geometrical, and agricultural ones.
Applying the methods of using the modern technics in work and suggesting improving these technics.
Studying and testing the ways used inmanipulating data and evaluating their methods including the validity of use, accuracy, and efficiency.
Evaluating the employees’ performance, training them, defining their needs, and developing their skills.

 

Environment of work

A data analyst usually works in the centralbureau of statistics and its directorates in governorates, and his/her work is office- based.
In Public Sector:
This career is practiced in the organizations of statistics and planning directory in a way suits the ministry or department and human and material resources like distributing labor forces and investing them. A data analyst work forms an important part in supporting the suggestions of employment and investment in ministries or departments.
In researches centers:
This career is narrowly used in private centers, and it has recently emerged. These centers are specialized in economics studies, marketing researches, insurance companies work, feasibility studies, and others. These bureaus collect and analyze data on the request of different activates private organizations.
 

Professional life

This career is important because it provides with significant information used in taking decisions, and it becomes more important as a result ofincreasing the commercial works in Syria. A data analyst begins his/her professional life by joining a group and working in preparing questionnaires, supervising data collection and organizing them in charts, and taking a role in suggesting the technics of data collected manipulating and applying these technics using modern computational tools. Later on, he/she can take a role in putting the strategies of analysis and developing its tools.

Getting the job

There is no specific legislation to practice this career in Syria. However, practicing it in a public sector needs a bachelor degree in statistics.A candidates who like to work in the central bureau of statistics and in its private bureaus in directories might requite to have a master degree or doctorate in statistics or demography.
A candidate who likes to work in ministries and governmental organizations should have a bachelor degree in economics, applied statistics specialization, besides a good experience in math such as, mathematical probabilities, mathematical statistics, and applied statistics. An employee should keep up to date with the digital and symbolic data manipulating, and he/she should have sufficient knowledge in computational tools that are used in statistical treatment, such as SPSS, SAS and other programs. Faculties of science and economics in Damascus University grant bachelor degree, master degree, and doctorate in statistics. The faculty of economics in Aleppo University grants a master degree and doctorate in demography.

  • Ability to work according to reasonable programs and methodology and within a group.
  • Ability to analyze and deduce conclusions.
  • Ability to keep up to date with developments in the modern technics of computer and learn them quickly.

  • Ability to keep up to date with the scientific researches, teaching and developing psychology.

Summary

A data analyst works in offices, defines the changes of the phenomenon that is under study and the main factors that affect it, and estimates its future. He/she prepares questionnaires applications, follows up data collection, tests data validity, and applies the strategy of analyzing data. Later on, he/she can suggest the strategy of analyzing data until reaching the phase of managing whole projects concerning data analysis.
