Nature of work

Sanitary engineering is the application of engineering methods to improve sanitation of human communities, primarily by providing the removal and disposal of human waste, and in addition to the supply of safe potable water. A sanitary engineer works for the development of sanitation. He/ she applys science and mathematical concepts to his / her major task which is to perform sanitation. He/ she usually :
·         Designs and directs construction and operation of hygienic projects such as waterworks, sewage, garbage and trash disposal plants, drainage systems, and insect and rodent control projects.
·          Plans development of watersheds and directs building of aqueducts, filtration plants, and storage and distribution systems for water supply.
·         Directs swamp drainage, insect spraying, and design of insect-proof buildings.
·         Plans and directs workers in building and operation of sewage-disposal plants.
·         Designs and controls operation of incinerators, sanitary fills, and garbage-reduction   plants to dispose of garbage and other refuse.

 

Environment of work

A sanitary engineer works in both office and field. However, he/ she spends most of the time in field because he/ she has to control and assist his/ her laborers. A sanitary engineer is provided with safety wardrobes and accessories to prevent accidents for he/ she is often exposed to huge and powerful materials and instruments.
 A sanitary engineer often works for 8-10 hours a day.

 

Professional life

 Engineering jobs remain in demand in Syria.  Despite of the recession, engineering remains as one of the highly needed abroad, and this includes the need for sanitary engineers. The salary given is still one of the highest salaries among industrial jobs.
Entry level for a sanitary engineer who completed good performance and experience can be promoted to senior sanitary engineer or project manager.
Sanitation engineers are typically employed by the following types of organizations:
• Cities, towns and rural municipalities
• Waste management organizations (often contracted to work for municipalities)
The salary of sanitation engineers can vary depending on a number of factors, including their level of education, their level of experience,  and where they work .
It is difficult to determine the average salary of sanitation engineers, as there is no reliable data available for this specific occupational group. We can however get a good idea of their salary level by looking at the salary level in compare with the career of landfill engineer, as it involves many of the same duties and responsibilities.
Starting salary is typically 30,000 SYP a month.

Getting the job

To become a sanitary engineer, you typically must have an engineering degree in sanitation engineer, environmental engineering or a related discipline. These programs will give him/her the skills required to design effective municipal waste disposal systems or devise new ways to reduce the amount of industrial waste in a community.

Candidates need to show evidence of the following:
·         Knowledge and ability to create and plan developments for sanitations
·         Knowledge and ability to create plan and strategies for projects
·         Must have the ability to create formulations and system that can be used for the project
·         Knowledge and ability to relay instructions to workers and fellow engineers
·         Ability to manage and implement  projects
·         Knowledge in managing materials needed
·         Ability to assist workers
·         Good communication  skills.
·         Knowledge in creating design using AutoCAD and can read and implement projects from blueprints.

Summary

A sanitary engineer plan and direct operation of water treatment plant to soften and purify water for human consumption or industrial use and be known as water-treatment-plant engineer. He/she inspects and regulates sanitary condition of public places, such as markets, parks, and camps. He/she advises industrial plants in disposal of obnoxious gases, oils, greases, and other chemicals.
