Nature of work

As a human resources manager be prepared to plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of an organization. You will coordinate the workforce to best use employees’ talents, identify ways to maximize their value, assess their productivity, and recommend changes to the organization’s structure to help meet budgetary goals.

You will also serve as a link between the management and employees by handling questions, administering employee services, and resolving work-related problems.

Overseeing an organization’s recruitment, interview, selection, and hiring processes is one of your main responsibilities, including the compensation and benefits or training and development programs.

You will also handle staffing issues, such as mediating disputes, firing employees, and directing disciplinary procedures. Besides, you will oversee employee relations, regulatory compliance, and employee-related services such as payroll and benefits in addition to coordinating and supervising the work of specialists and staff.

Last but not least, you will have to consult with top executives and advise managers on organizational policies, such as equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment.

Environment of work

As a human resources manager, you will be working in an office. However, if you are working for an organization that has offices nationwide, you might have to travel to visit other branches as well as to attend professional meetings or to recruit employees.

Of course, since you have many responsibilities on your shoulders, you will need to work full time in order to take care of all those tasks.

Professional life

  If you like taking care of employees and handling their issues, then becoming a Labor Relations manager (employee relations manager) is your perfect choice. You will oversee employment policies, manage and negotiate labor contracts (including wages, benefits, and union and management practices), and handle labor complaints and grievance between employees and management.

  If you are more into payment issues, we advise you to consider the Payroll Manager position where you will supervise the operations of the payroll department. Your main job is to ensure that all aspects of payroll are processed correctly. You will handle payroll procedures and problems, and prepare reports for the accounting department.

  Do you like choosing the best people for the best positions? The Recruiting manager (staffing manager) position is your natural place. You will oversee the hiring responsibilities of the HR department by either supervising recruiters, or recruiting people for high-level positions yourself.

Your median annual wage as a HRM will be 75000 SYP.

 

Getting the job

In order to reach the position of a HRM, you must have a combination of both academic qualifications and related work experience.

You need to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or Business Administration to begin with. Or you can get a Bachelor’s Degree in another field and take courses in Human Resources subjects, such as Labor or Industrial Relations, Organizational Development, or Industrial Psychology. If you have a very good work experience in this domain, you might have the chance to become a HRM even if you studied a different major in college like Finance, Business Management, Education, and Information Technology. Some higher-level jobs require a Master’s Degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

Regarding the work experience you need for this job, you should know that you have to work hard and long enough to deserve such a position. In fact, this job requires a certain level of the ability to organize, manage, and lead others. Some positions accept management experience in a variety of fields, but many positions require experience working with human resources programs, such as compensation and benefits plans or with a Human Resources Information System (HRIS).

  Decision-making skills. Since your job entails hiring and firing people when needed, you must be able to balance the strengths and weaknesses of different options and decide the best course of action. Many of your decisions have a significant impact on workers or operations.

  Organizational skills. It is essential for any HRM to be able to organize and manage several projects at once and prioritize tasks.
