Nature of work

He Works on monitoring and analyzing the climate information and climatic phenomena, predicting the incoming climatic conditions and submit the reports  to the concerned authorities, joining the essential sciences with practices, preparing the technical reports, managing of his subordinators, working  on developing their skills, develop procedures, and provide requirements of occupational safety and health. Tasks are:
  • Monitor the climatic phenomena using ground, air, and space surveillance equipments
  • Aerial mapping and forecasting of climate conditions
  • Interpret climate information
  • Study and interpret weather’s  reports, maps, and pictures which have been got by ground, air, and space observations
  • Expect the future climate conditions
  • Prepare the aeronautical and maritime reports to help in determining aircraft and ships paths
  • Develop the work methods by using modern techniques
  • Prepare the air monitor equipments bid stipulations and study them financially and technically
  • Prepare meteorological technical reports and develop the work methods by using the most modern techniques
  • Evaluate subordinates performance to determine their training need  and develop their skills
  • Provide occupational safety and health requirements

Environment of work

  • Meteorologist usually works about eight hours a day in his office throughout the days of  the week, but his job requires him sometimes to work at night, weekends, and holidays during emergencies such as storms and emergent climate conditions.
  • This job should be completed and accomplished perfectly by the deadlines.
  • This job requires the presence at weather stations where they may be in the airports, or another cities, or around far isolated suburbs.
  •  This job may need spending sometime in monitoring weather conditions and gathering information from aircrafts, or working with T.V .and  radio station broadcasting to broadcast meteorological reports.  
  • Meteorologist can work independently within the powers conferred upon him or as a team member
  • This job can be carried out by men and women.
  • This job is in evolution and needs appropriate job nature.
  • Meteorologist must have credibility and integrity, and does not succumb to his emotional effects. So, he should give his opinion and document his work results clearly  and totally impartiality.
  • This job may require travelling to other countries for training in order to gain other countries experiences .

Professional life

  • Meteorologistcan work independently or as a team member within the powers conferred upon him in private or public sectors. His salary in public sector will be at least 20000 Syrian bounds.
  • Meteorologist work is very necessary for many other associated career such as heating and cooling design systems in the buildings, agricultural planning, tourist programming. And many other things that related to the weather forecasting.
  • Meteorologist has effective assistance in determining the land use and expecting the agriculture production. In addition to solve pollution problems and fresh water deficiency.
  • Meteorologist can use metrology study  development to evaluate the air quality and its negative impact on the environment, looking forward to using the most effective methods to control the air pollution.
  • Meteorologist may travel abroad for training or gaining more meteorology expertise.

Getting the job

  • For getting this  job, the person have to study in Agriculture Faculty, Department of Essential Sciences, or Department of Rural Engineering, or Department ofRenewable Natural Resources and Ecology.
  • The students during that should get some related courses such as: climate and meteorology, irrigation and drainage techniques and remote sensing techniques  and practical study of several agriculture, forestry, farm machinery, and rural development courses. In addition to his foreign languages, computer programming, engineering quality knowledge.
  • Preferably, AgricultureFaculty  graduated students pursue their graduatedprogram studies in the Department of Rural Engineering, or Department ofRenewable Natural Resources and the Ecologyto get their master's and Ph.D. degrees.

  • Ability to use computer programs, sophisticated atmosphere’s mathematical models
  • Ability to study climate changes for the incoming hundreds years, or even millions
  • Ability to work  effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and being familiar with the various work environments
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret wind, rain, sun, temperature past records of specific areas
  • Ability to create solutions and giving creative ideas
  • Ability of continuing self-learning to keep pace with the rapid technological development and the possibility of transferring knowledge and skills in his major
  • Ability to accomplish his emission punctually, and managing time efficiently according to the priorities
