Nature of work

He works independently within the powers conferred upon him to classify animals and select suitable strains, prepare animal breeding programs, develop animal production, nutrition and healthcare methods, prepare  work materials quantity and quality tables, and bid specification and requirements, manage  subordinates and develop  their skills; develop  procedures, and provide  requirements of occupational safety and health. Tasks are:
  • Identify livestock breeds and types for various production purposes Study the most productivity species in the market.
  • Identify barns specifications, and various production factors.
  • Prepare breeding programs,  animal diseases prevention and treatments, nutrition and fattening programs
  • Prepare the livestock production and propagation devices and equipments
  • Identifying  livestock  materials and equipment quantity tables specifications
  • Prepare livestock production and propagation bid pre-requisites, and the technical and financial aspects.
  • Prepare  the livestock production technical reports, and develop the working methods by using modern techniques.
  • Evaluate subordinates performance and  their training needs  and  improve their skills.
  • Provide  occupational safety and health requirements

Environment of work

  • Livestock engineer  works about eight hours a day in a  week, but his job requires him sometimes to work extra time at the weekends, and during the holidays  during  emergency days during birth and vaccine season which is need a long time of work.
  • The work environment requires to wear special field dress, gloves, and shoes. 
  • The various types of  animal breeding works requires using of multiple different equipments.   
  • Working  independently is possible by establishing his own animal farm, or working as team member in  livestock production farms enterprises.
  • Commitment to international livestock production standard specifications  products and work to achieve quality performance.
  • Livestock engineer  must have credibility and integrity, and does not succumb to any emotional  effects, and gives his opinion in documenting the results clearly and impartiality

Professional life

  • Livestock engineer can work independently or as a team member within the powers conferred upon him in private or public sectors. His salary in public sector will be at least 20,000 Syrian bounds.
  • Livestock engineer contributes in livestock breeding and production planning, and animal products selecting(meat, milk, eggs…etc.) that will be produced in his farm, prepares the technical reports about the activities as well as the office works, and selects local leaders to train them.
  • He contributes in specification production requires  that are used in work place.
  • Livestock engineer profession develops when he/she gains more practical and professional experiences by profession level degrees as field supervisor engineer to bigger livestock management Departments, which is included the tasks of livestock production planning and applying.  
  • Livestock engineer may travel abroad for training or gaining more expertise in the field of livestock.

Getting the job

  • For getting this  job, the person have to study in Agriculture Faculty, Department of Essential Sciences, or Animal Production.
  • The students during that should study agricultural courses including grasslands and deserts, the basics of animal foraging , animals breeding physiology , forages,   and get some related courses such as: Goat and sheep breeding, cows and buffalos  breeding, horses and camels breeding, animal health and genetic improvement. In addition to his foreign languages, computer programming, engineering quality knowledge.
  •    Preferably, Agriculture Faculty  graduated students pursue their graduated program studies in the Department of Animal Production to get their master's and Ph.D.
