Nature of work

He/she works independently to study the land characteristics and component and appropriate fertilization program, irrigation and drainage scheming. He/sheuses  modern technology, prepares bid specification and requirements, prepares hydrological maps. He/she also determines groundwater wells locations, manages subordinates and develops their skills.He/sheprovides requirements of occupational safety and health.
Tasks are :
  • Study and oversee the plant, soil, and irrigation water samples tests
  • Study and design the irrigation systems properties and drainage systems efficiency
  • Prepare hydrological and hydro-geological maps.
  • Point out the surface and groundwater basins, and the way of increasing drainage
  • Point out the groundwater wells
  • Use modern technologies and develop quality standards.
  • Identify materials and equipments quantity tables and specifications.
  • Prepare  irrigation and fertilizers bid pre-requisites and technical reports.
  • Develop the working methods by using modern techniques.
  • Evaluate the performance to identify their training needs, and train them to  improve their skills.
  • Provide occupational safety and health requirements

Environment of work

  • Working hours vary, but usually it is40 hours a week.
  • Work environments diverse, in the field which takes the most of the work hours, and in the office or in the laboratory.
  • Field work requires body labor under all weather conditions, cold or hot, and using digging tools such as, hammers and shovels, in water contact holding heavy tools, which is required special work dresses.
  • Experts and researchers in this field face financial support deterrent.
  • Reports are required on time before the deadline and this may require a long work- time.
  • Working independently is possible in case of experience consultation.
  • Full time job is required.
  • This job can be carried out by men and women. Since this job requires effort, so women can work in the office and men can do the field work, when they are working as a team.
  • This job requires sometimes to travel abroad for training in order to gain other countries experiences.

Professional life

  • Irrigation and Fertilization Managing Engineer almost works as a combined team member, his/her duty is to calculate the available amount of water in the project area in order to develop agricultural, social, and industrial policy.
  • Roads engineer shares him/her the work in determining the irrigation and drainage canals volume, particularly on the roads or beside railways.
  • Works based  on climate information that are provided by local weather station in the region to determine the drainage and sewer volume for preventing flooding risk.
  • He /she cannot  work without waterfalls and  hydrology engineer, so that he can determine the volume and the dam  high  level, after determining rivers abundance and the current amount of water  in the river under normal conditions and during rainfalls and floods.

  • For getting this  job, the person have to study in Agriculture Faculty, Department of Essential Sciences, or Department of Rural Engineering, or Department of Renewable Natural Resources and Ecology, or Department of Soil and Land Reclamation, or Department of Horticulture .
  • The students during that should get some related courses about forests and ecology, fruit trees, nurseries, soils types, water maps, agriculture machines that used in soil preparation and reclamation.  . In addition to his foreign languages, computer programming, engineering quality knowledge.
  • Preferably, Agriculture Faculty graduated students pursue their graduated program studies in the Department of Rural Engineering, or Department of Renewable Natural Resources and the Ecology to get their master's and PhD. degrees.

Skills

  • Ability to study the  physical properties, the distribution, and the quantity of watersheds, groundwater, and surface water.
  • Ability to use advanced tools and modern techniques in his work.
  • Ability to work as a consultant in water companies to help employees, and government agencies in applying work environment policy, regarding to water pollution dispersion, and flood control. 
  • Ability to work long time, in the office and the field.
  • He/sheshould have experience in topography maps clarification.
  • He/sheshouldhave a logical explanation for the phenomena, especially, climatic ones to adopt in the application.
  • Ability to provide a logical argument for farmers when proposing any irrigation or drainage methods in their lands.
  • He/sheshould have good manners and accept the specialists team members notes.
  • Ability to link the expected results by the phenomena
