Nature of work

He works solitarily and within the given power tostudy and define nurseries’ locations and needs of materials, prepare the productive plan and oversee its implementation, prepare schedules of specifications and conditions for nurseries bidding and purchases requirements, and prepare technical reports and manage subordinates to develop their skills, and develop procedures for the preparation of general and vocational health and safety requirements. Tasks are:
  •  Study the appropriate climate conditions for nurseries
  •  Identify nurseries’ needs
  •  Identify seedlings marketing needs, and prepare productivity plans
  •  Prepare programs for arranging of nursery ground
  •  Identify varieties of required seedlings, and selectappropriate times for cultivation, and propagation methods
  •  Prepare programs for irrigation, fertilization and pest control
  •  Identify quantities of materials and equipment and its specifications
  •  Prepare schedules of specifications and conditions for bidding and purchases requirements for nurseries, and technical reports
  •  Develop methods using modern techniques
  •  Evaluate subordinates performance to identify needed training to develop their skills
  •  Provide means and procedures for health and safety requirements

Environment of work

  • Engineer for managing agricultural nurseries usually works about 8 hours a day throughout week days, but might be needed sometimes to work overtime during peak periods for preparation and the production of seedlings as well as marketing seasons when needed
  • Work environment is a combination between office and field work in nurseries
  • He can work independently as self-employment to provide consultations when experience is acquired
  • Full-time work is required
  • This job can be carried by  either male or female equally especially in providing appropriate information to deal with seedlings

Getting the job

For getting this job, one has to study at Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture after achieving a general scientific or agricultural vocational secondary education with good or very good grades, respectively.
The student should attend some related courses such as: plant propagation, physiology of horticultural plants, the production of summer vegetable crops, orchards machinery, evergreen fruit production, designing and analysing agricultural experiments, the production of winter vegetable crops, deciduous fruit production, production of ornamental plants, biotechnology for horticultural plants, environmental and physiological diseases for horticultural crops, pests of fruit trees and vegetables, , medicinal and aromatic plants, genetic improvement and producing vegetables seeds, protected agriculture , genetic improvement of fruit trees, design and landscaping, in addition to supportive knowledge in foreign languages, computer and programming.
Agriculture Faculty  graduate is preferably to carry on postgraduate studies for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the Department of Horticulture
