Nature of work

Networks and pumping stations engineer concerns with installing, repairing, maintaining and testing the mechanical machines and moving parts at water and wastewater treatment plants. His/her duties vary according to his work field:

Designing field
  • Designing the water pumping stations particularly pumps and choosing the required quality and quantity of pumps.
  • Designing the water networks, large diameter pipes and materials specifications.
Operating field
  • Monitoring and inspecting mechanical equipment of networks and pumping stations to detect problems and to ensure that equipment are operating efficiently and safely.
  • Checking all parameters of the whole water networks regularly, preparing, and sending all defects to maintenance section.
  • Recommending an improvement on the existing operation system and developing operation, safety, and maintenance procedures.
  • Adjusting valves on equipment to provide power, regulate, and set operations of system or industrial processes.
  • Testing electrical systems to determine voltages using voltage meters.
Operating field
  • Preparing and checking the reports of operation and updating all related database.
  • Reviewing and checking the water distribution pumping hours regularly and maintaining adequate stock in the reservoirs.

Environment of work

  • Networks and pumping stations engineer works in the public section for 8 hours a day except weekends. He/she may work extra time if there is necessity. In private section he/she works from 8 to 12 hours a day according to the work nature.
  • Networks and pumping stations engineer who works at the treatment plants (open area) should wear a safety clothes, gloves, mask and helmet. For the official work he/she wears normal clothes.
  • The tools used to achieve the official work: computer, design programs and references.
  • He/she should have an obligation to design according to the world standard specifications of pumping stations, the world specifications of pumps and large diameter pipes, and materials specifications and achieve it to ensure the work quality

Professional life

Networks and pumping stations engineer can work individually or with work team either in private or public section. He/she can work individually via order of Syrian engineers by opening engineering office for mechanical consultations, or he/she can work in a comprehensive engineering office with different specialists of engineers.
  • In private projects he/she can work with a comprehensive work team contains all engineering specialists to study and design the networks and pumping stations of the industrial projects.
  • In general project he/she works in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants to design, operate and control the networks and pumping stations.
  • In general section the professional life of the engineer develops with the time when he/she gets experience from designer engineer to head the engineering section or become a manager of design/supervisor team, and maybe he/she becomes a general manager of water treatment plant.
  • His/her monthly salary when he/she starts at general section is about 20000 Syrian Pound.
  • He/she can travel abroad to follow training programs or to give experience in water and wastewater treatment field.

Getting the job

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical, electrical and civil engineering with experience of operation and maintenance in water projects and pumping stations.
  • Becoming a member at Order of Syrian Engineers.
  • Using computer programs such as Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge in the following subjects (study, design, operate, and maintain the water projects, networks and pumping stations, mechanical and electrical knowledge and experience in serving pumps, pumping, treatment and management wastewater).
  • Knowledge in the international specifications and codes to design the networks and pumping stations at water and wastewater treatment plants, international specifications of pumps and large diameter pipes 

Skills

  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and computer-generated reports and explaining what information means and how it can be used for others.
  • Experience in water projects including successful completion of networks and pumping stations.
  • Showing effective character skills in work environment and capability to invent solutions and participate in choosing work methods and tools.
  • Achieving the required works at time and managing the time effectively.
  • Managing the resources and duties effectively possibility of development.
  •  Having communication and analytical skills.
  • Analyzing problems and taking appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation equipment and systems.
  • Demonstrating competence in managing and leading other team members.
  • Identifying the educational needs, developing formal educational or training programs and teaching other team members
  • Teamwork spirit (work with group to accomplish tasks and build mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members).
  • Using computer systems (including hardware and software) to program and enter data or process information.
