Nature of work
Production technical is a profession in the technical field. The Production technician is responsible for understanding and interpreting the technical brochures issued by manufacturer concerning operation, installation and maintenance.The tasks of production technician can be classified into:
- Drawing and reading engineering plans and drawings mechanical manufacturing, assembly, test, maintenance and calibration.
- Knowledge in IT and PC and basic applications.
- Knowledge in traditional machining as well as CNC and forming machines.
- Performing tasks related to manufacturing, machining, and forming of metals.
- Preparing tenders for purchasing and maintenance of machines, forming machines, and welding machines, which must include technical and financial details.
- Preparing technical reports and developing work methods using advanced technology.
- Providing and using career safety tools and healthy working conditions.
- Applying quality assurance and industrial safety procedures.
Environment of work
- The production technician works for 8 hours daily except weekends and official holidays. He/she may have to work overtime even on holidays especially when there is installation or periodic or emergency maintenance works that requires long time.
- This career requires special uniform.
- He/she needs measures and mechanical tools to perform the tasks.
- He/she can work individually by establishing own company specialized in mechanical manufacturing and maintenance.
- He/she should have a commitment to the international specification standards for machines, installing them in the proper environment and works on assuring the performance quality.
Professional life
- The Production technician can perform the work whether in the public or private sectors.. The salary at the beginning when working for the public sector is about 17000 Syrian Pounds.
- The professional course of the production technician develops by gaining administrative and practical experiences through employment progression as workshop chief then to the larger circles and departments in managing projects as an expert which includes planning tasks for the implementing stages and defining the implementation priorities.
- The top ranking graduates of the technical institutes, they can apply to the faculty of the same profession.
- They can travel to make some maintenance or to give practical experience for the installation of some systems.

The Production technician can perform tasks within the following professional sectors:Private sector, i.e. his/her own workshop.
Public and private sectors in all industrial establishments and workshops for manufacturing and assembly of mechanical parts.
The Production technician can continue higher education at department of production engineering at public universities (available for 3% top ranking students).
Getting the job
The profession can be achieved through applying to the technical institute for mechanic and electricity department of production after finishing the senior high school scientific section with a suitable score. Student at this department study the following subjects: preparation field includes foreign language, computer science that helps in modern research and communication, other professional knowledge fields in electricity and mechanics, and a supportive knowledge fields includes metrology, quality engineering, industrial and occupational safety. Specific Skills:
- Knowledge in the principles of mechanical manufacturing both traditional and programmed and some professional software related to CNC.
- Knowledge in reading and analyzing the implementation plans for mechanical parts and tolerances and using metrology tools as well as defect detecting or diagnosing tools.
- Knowledge in operating traditional and programmed machines.
- Knowledge in operating traditional and programmed forming machines.Knowledge in performing periodical and emergency maintenance for machines and calibrating machines to ensure quality.
