Nature of work

NDT is concerned with the study of microstructural homogeneity of materials and industrial parts and decide their ability to perform the required tasks. NDT aims to discover the defects in the parts and define their properties without destroying them. NDT also is useful for inspection of parts during maintenance and ensure the quality of products.
 
  • Determining the NDT method to test all type of industrial products and tools including documentation according to project requirement.
  • Providing the technical inputs and estimating the cost for NDT, including tools, consumable materials.
  • Reviewing NDT services, calculations and technical offers.
  • Consulting the contractors about the feasibility of NDT for a given work to yield an effective results especially form cost view.
  • Performing the practical training for technicians and freshmen on new techniques.
  • Monitoring the performance of inspection.
  • Preparing tenders for all works related to NDT work and evaluating offers technically and financially.
  • Evaluating employee’s performance and defining their needs for training and developing their skills.
  • Ensuring the availability of occupational health and safety tools.

Environment of work

  • The NDTEngineer works at office or workshops and factories. Office work may include setting test procedures, developing equipment and tools for tests, preparing technical reports, cost estimation, managing employees, and providing the requirement of occupational health and safety.
  • NDT engineer travels so often to meet with engineers, partners, suppliers, and costumers hence communication skills are important.
  • The engineer works for 8 hours daily except weekends and official holidays.
  • He/she may have to work overtime even on holidays especially when there is work that requires long time.
  • The uniform has to be according to the instruction of occupational safety department (special suite, helmet, special shoes, goggles,….)
  • He/she should have a commitment to the international specification standards in all works performed and ensure total quality management.

Professional life

  • NDT engineer may work individually or within a team in private or public sectors. Usually the NDT engineer is the head of the team.
  • The salary when working for the public sector starts by 20000 Syrian Pounds.
  • The professional course of the NDTengineer develops by gaining administrative and practical experience through employment progression and promotion to the bigger circles and departments in project management, factories and manufacturing companies.
  • He/she can work individually by establishing ownNDT company

  • Companies that produces NDT machines and tools.

  • Nuclear and conventional power generation station.
  • Airplanes’ maintenance companies.

Getting the job

The profession can be achieved through:
 
  • Gaining a degree in mechanical engineering, department of Material Science Engineering. He/she should have knowledge in materials properties, metallurgy, metal alloys, welding technology, computers and programming, and heat treatment.
  • Passing national qualification test.
  • Joining Engineering Order.
  • Qualification as inspector Level 2 or 3 from a certified organization.
  • Job progression.
