Nature of work

Power stations engineer searches the methods of improving the efficiency of power stations in addition to the improvement of combustion process to approach the whole combustion as possible to reduce CO emission. The engineer works to reach the optimum performance of the station.
The tasks assigned to the engineer:
  • Estimation of the country's need to power from statistical information related to populated areas, urban and rural, and number of factories and capacities, and their distribution on the entire country.
  • Selection of proper location for power stations to be as close as possible to fuel resources with consideration of environmental factor and wind.
  • Study the possibility of water supply for the use of condensers in steam stations.
  • Offer analytical and numerical studies which are considered the base to improve the efficiency.
  • Continuous research to develop the stations and improve the efficiency.
  • Equip research laboratories related to experimental results on capacity and efficiency of stations and compare them with analytical and numerical studies. 

Environment of work

  • Working hours at research centers starts from 36 hours a week. On site working hours may vary according to the need of the work. This is may be 24 hours.
  • The working environment varies from office work, research work at laboratory, work at stations manufacturing sites, and stations building sites.
  • The work may be within big governmental projects or small private projects within consulting offices.
  • This work can be performed by male or female engineers.
  • This profession is fast developing and hence it is may be exhausting.

The engineer may be requested to travel abroad to countries that have advanced technology to attend training courses.

  • In this profession, the chance for job promotion is excellent. This profession requires continuous study and training.
  • Many companies that manufacture power station equipment are searching for new markets due to economic challenges.
  • Job promotion is related to the skills and improvement of the engineer in one hand and to the structure of the company on the other hand. This requires some skill in business management to run the capital, assets, human resources and information technology at the company.
  • The engineer may be promoted into a consultant after his experience is enough and after submitting studies that proves his skills.
  • The monthly salary of freshmen is about 25000 Syrian pounds.

  • Earning a degree in mechanical engineering, department of power engineering, department of production engineering or department of nuclear engineering.

The engineer has to gain knowledge about the amount of power needed for generation within the country. And should have the ability to select the type of power station suitable for the designed purpose.
On the other hand, the engineer should have the ability to offer analytical and numerical studies about the design, maintenance and utilization of the stations. The engineer should have the ability for continuous learning to be updated with the recent development in this field
